Chief Appraiser Stephanie Lee said protest season is in full swing in the Lamar County Appraisal District, and more formal hearings by the Appraisal Review Board are expected this year than ever before.
“There were more than 1,700 formal protests last year, and there will be many more protests this year,” Lee said at a Wednesday afternoon meeting, adding that the deadline for filing formal protests is May 5. Said it was March 31st.
The ARB Board of Directors will begin hearings Monday at the Valuation District Office at 521 Bonham Street and will have until mid-July to coincide with submission of final valuations to the district tax bodies by the July 25 deadline. It is planned to continue.
A report by operating director Sue Shelton said 35,606 notices were mailed to property tax owners in May, with personal property expected to be mailed by the end of last week.
“With protest season in full swing, we are doing our best to answer calls and answer as many questions as possible before forwarding to an appraiser,” Shelton said of the appraisal district staff. “Evidence of comparable sales and equity is coming to the ARB hearings.”
Shelton also advised that there are two tax sales slated for the next few months in Lamar County Court. The first will go on sale at 1:30 p.m. on July 5 at 22 county properties, and the second at 1:30 p.m. on September 5 at 56 city vacant lots. block.
At Wednesday’s meeting, directors heard a presentation by representatives of Eagleview, an aerial imaging company that provides detailed maps of properties in the county. Currently, in the evaluation district contract the viaduct he is signed every three years. The district is considering the construction of a viaduct on a two-year basis as the development of rural areas increases. The directors took no action regarding the new contract.
