Since the Paris Aquatic Center (1625 rue Clement) opened for the season, about 100 people have tried to beat the heat and literally warn of excessive heat every day.
Public swimming pools held family nights on Fridays, offering a variety of ways to keep summer temperatures cool.
Dozens swam, floated, walked, and clung to their parents in pools. Among them was a 44-year-old mother from Paris who used to go to the pool every other day with his 9-year-old son, Tajdric Scales.
“I’m trying to teach him how to swim,” his mother said, later admitting she didn’t know how to swim herself.
Due to staffing issues, the center does not offer swimming lessons, but manager Makena Fodge, 17, who lives in Paris, said classes could resume in the future. rice field.
“I am certified as a (water safety instructor) so I will be able to teach swimming lessons,” she said.
Makena-Fodge said the center is recruiting because staff shortages have recently closed the pool during normal business hours.
For those who want to become lifeguards, the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation will work with the American Red Cross to expedite the certification process July 14-16. If you are interested, please contact the City of Paris at 908-784-9299 or jwsmith@paristexas.govAccording to the job posting.
Makena Fodge said she hopes to bring back family nights every Friday and other events.
“We’re trying to bring back movie nights,” she said. “We have a big projector for that.”
Her sister, 16-year-old Orble Fodge, who also works at the center as a cross-certified lifeguard for American Red, spoke about some of her duties.
“I have to follow the rules,” she said. “If someone gets hurt, I have to treat them, help them, and make sure everyone is safe in the water.”
In her second summer at Poole, she said she had several close calls as a lifeguard.
“I’ve helped some babies stay in the water or flip over,” she said.
The center has no age limit, but children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult, according to the center’s website.
As for why she wanted to be a certified lifesaver, it was simple.
“I really like being in the water,” said Aubrey Fodge.
Another lifeguard at the pool, Braden Shepard, 19, from Paris, said he works part-time at the Clarksville Times but works full-time at the center.
“A friend recommended this job to me a while ago and it was a really fun summer job,” he said.
When asked if he witnessed a close call or if he had to help, Shepard calmly replied.
“I saved about two people this year,” he said. “Other than that, nothing special.”
The pool is open from 1-8 PM daily through Labor Day weekend.
