In October 2021, the Paris ISD launched a new program district-wide. It matches a PISD employee as a mentor to her peer group of five students.
Sabrina Rosson, ESSER III Coordinator, Paris ISD, said:
This program allows mentors to provide the support students need.
“Mentors help in career exploration, help set goals, hold students accountable, check attendance, grades and behavior, are there to listen, be objective, and most importantly It’s about building relationships, relationships, relationships,” says Rosson. He said.
According to Rosson, a recent study found that mentors saw the most improvements in self-confidence, relationships, attitudes and behavior, with positive comments from mentors.
“These statements from mentors show that the program is working to build relationships with CHAMPS,” said Rosson.
The program also encourages family participation. Esser III Mentor Her coordinator Katrina Mitchell applauded the support and participation of parents and guardians in the program.
“As the program has grown, so has the support from all walks of life for the program. I was. “This is not possible unless our parents/guardians want to be involved.”
The program includes activities and events throughout the school year, including kick-off events and carnivals.
“Students and mentors will participate in pumpkin painting, cookie decorating, fall festivities, basketball, football and volleyball games, tailgate parties, homecoming parades, Thanksgiving and Christmas activities, food coloring parties, and blanket/sock drives. I have attended campus events such as the local nursing home,” Rosson said.
Most recently, two kickoff events were held in January after the holiday break. An elementary school campus event included a laser show. The Secondary Campus hosted a “Family Game Show Night” featuring games such as “Wildcat” Feud and Let’s Make a Deal. The event also included a Lip Sync Battle and an opportunity to learn a TikTok dance.
More events are planned, including end-of-year kickoffs and summer CHAMP camps.
“Overall, we are pleased with the program and the progress we are seeing among mentors, students and parents,” Rosson said.
