A rare case of rabies has been detected in a dog kept in a shelter in the Paris region. The animal has bitten several people who had to be transported to the Anti-Rabies Center at the Pasteur Institute for treatment.
“The Pasteur Institute has confirmed a case of rabies in a husky dog housed in a shelter in Evry-Courqueronne, Essonne,” the French Ministry of Agriculture said Thursday.
Before being quarantined, the infected dog “bite several people, but they were treated immediately.” Pasteur Institute Anti-Rabies Centerunderwent highly effective post-exposure prophylactic treatment,” the ministry added.
Others identified as having been exposed to animals are also being treated as needed, the ministry said.
The dog identified in this case first showed signs of illness on 19 October and died on 25 October.
Authorities said the dog contracted rabies before reaching the shelter and was left alone in the kennel or recreation room for the entire duration of the epidemic.
Initial investigations indicate that the dog may have been “illegally imported from Morocco, a country where rabies is endemic.”
