RENO — The city council voted at its monthly meeting on Monday to give Reno police officers a $5,000 pay raise and establish a sign-on bonus for future hires.
“We have to be competitive,” city councilor Amanda Willows said. “There is no way around this to attract quality applicants.”
City Councilman Brandon Thomas, who requested the agenda, said the department was short of one staff member, making up 20% of the department’s workforce.

The council then approved the purchase of a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe police pursuit vehicle for use by law enforcement for $64,746.
Before discussing police operations, the city council heard from Reno Volunteer Fire Chief Chad Graves for an update on the renovation of the fire station.
It then approved $10,850.85 for the purchase of three sets of personal protective equipment for volunteers and paid firefighters.
Graves said the purchase of personal protective equipment was slightly over budget, but the department would comply with state laws.
“This allows us to comply with the state’s requirement not to have equipment older than 10 years,” he told Congress. “This is a little over budget, but we have enough headroom in other items to cover the overrun, so it doesn’t matter in terms of the end result of the overall budget.”
The City Council then began discussing non-government services, approving a total of $24,100 to upgrade water meters to be 4G compliant, followed by $11,329.95 for software updates used by the city.
It also approved the reappointment of various board members to their respective seats, including Archie Sims and Dole Smith to the Economic Development Committee and Rick Jordan and Willows to the Cemetery Committee. was done.
