It’s been almost a week since two candidates applied for and accepted candidates for the upcoming school board elections of the Chitham Independent School District.
Administrative assistant Cheryl Garrison said only incumbent lawmakers Dashiell Floyd and Craig Burns had submitted the necessary documentation to be included on the ballot.
The purpose of the May 6 General Election is to fill the two seats currently occupied by Board Vice-Chairman Floyd and Board Deputy Secretary Burns.
Floyd has been on the board since 2011, and Barnes has been on the board since 2014, Superintendent Tommy Scharelle said.
Their seats expire in May, according to the district’s website.
The first day to apply for candidacy is Wednesday and the last day to apply is February 17, Garrison said, adding that the term is for three years.
To meet the eligibility requirements to run for office on the school board, a candidate must be at least 18 years old, be a U.S. citizen, be a registered voter, have never been convicted of a felony, or have been found guilty by a court of law. You must have never been determined to be disabled and have lived in Texas for 20 years. She has been with the school district for at least six months, starting 12 months before the deadline.
Applications to secure a ballot place may be picked up at the Chisum ISD Administration Building, 3250 Church St.
According to Chisum’s website, office hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, with the administration building open an additional hour until 5:00 pm on the last day.
Applications can be returned by email, but must be notarized before being sent, according to the district’s website.
Early voting for the May 6 election will take place from April 24 to May 2 at the Lamar County Courthouse Annex, 231 Lamar Avenue, Paris.
