Ukraine and Russia: a dangerous escalation

Seven months after the war between Russia and Ukraine began, Vladimir Putin began partial mobilization and threatened to use nuclear weapons “if Russia’s vital interests were threatened.”

The UN General Assembly has been in New York since Tuesday, but the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has accelerated the situation. Over the past 10 days, Ukrainian forces have managed to take some positions away from Russian forces that had to redeploy to the front lines. We are waiting for a reply from Moscow. It was the Kremlin masters who defined the contours.

On Wednesday, September 21, Vladimir Putin announced in a short speech a “partial mobilization” of combat-age Russians.
Vladimir Putin said the “Nazi regime in Kyiv” was financially and militarily supported by the West and was a threat to Russia. He added: [was] If threatened, we will certainly use every means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people…. Those who threaten us with nuclear weapons know that this extortion can be directed against them. There is something you should know.

The escalation will take place on September 23 and 27, 2022, when referendums will be held in four Ukrainian provinces: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson. From Moscow’s point of view, these pro-Russian provinces look torn between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. For Putin, “they have the right to self-determination.”
